As the founder of All Island Martial Arts, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative power of martial arts in the lives of my students. But before I could share that gift with others, I had to embark on my own journey.

My martial arts journey began in the late 1980s, but it was 1990 that truly marked the start of my path with Master Johnson, my original instructor in the ATA (American Tae Kwon Do Association). I was just 6 years old and very shy. I was looking for a way to break out of my shell and find my confidence. Martial arts offered me a unique opportunity to channel my energy into something positive and challenging.
As I progressed, I discovered that martial arts wasn’t just about physical training; it was about self-improvement, discipline, and camaraderie. I wasn’t interested in competition or tournaments; instead, I focused on the journey and personal growth. Through martial arts, I made lifelong friends, traveled to different states, and participated in seminars that broadened my horizons.

Over the years, I’ve been part of various martial arts organizations, including the ATA and Eastern USA International Martial Arts Association. Each organization has taught me valuable lessons and helped me grow as a martial artist and individual. In 2005, I began training under a new instructor and eventually decided to start my own studio. After a few years, I co-founded All Island Martial Arts with the memory and inspiration of my late father, Dave Hutchings, in 2010. His legacy lives on through our school, and I’m proud to continue his tradition of teaching and mentoring.
